Much like we already do with Characters, I think it's a good idea to commission a Namespace for Settings.

Mark-up copied over from this TLP post. I was told it would be more appropriate to bring it up here.

This is not a trope proposal. This is a proposal to create a new Subpage Namespace for Settings within a given work.

Proposing this here to get feedback on whether we need this. I do think it could be useful, especially for works like Doctor Who which have a huuuuge number of Settings, each with their own associated tropes. Splitting them off from the Main works page might help de-clutter some Trope Overdosed works pages. We already did this with Characters pages some time ago.

Note: Pages like this are intended to be used specifically for tropes pertaining to the settings within a given work; eg: the time period, the aesthetics of the environment, the general mood of the place (like if its a Crapsack World or not).

Short version:

FOLDER: Setting Name 1

  • Associated Trope 1: Description of how the trope applies.
  • Associated Trope 2: Application of the trope.
  • Associated Trope 3: Trope applied like ____.

/FOLDER

FOLDER: Setting Name 2

  • Associated Trope 1: Trope usage description.
  • Associated Trope 2: Trope used like this.
  • Associated Trope 3: Trope used this way.

/FOLDER

FOLDER: Setting Name 3

  • Associated Trope 1: You get the idea.
  • Associated Trope 2: Do I need to go on?
  • Associated Trope 3: This is getting a bit redundant.

/FOLDER

Below the line is an example mark-up format for what any given page might look like. I'm using Terraria as a demonstration, since that game has a variety of settings, but not too many that this will get out of hand. Any given work will follow roughly the same format. Alternatively, if there are settings within settings in a work (like the different rooms in a house), then they can be separated by headers, as different teams/groups of characters are.

The URL for this particular page would be https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Settings/Terraria.

Tbh, sorting tropes by setting seems like it would add clutter, rather than reduce it, particularly since you would still need a "general" tab for the examples of environmental tropes that belong to several settings or none.

Seems likely to be more confusing than helpful.

I think the idea to have a subpage for the setting of a work isn't a bad one. It's been discussed before, especially in the context of the SoonTM upcoming new version of the site.

Like with the Characters subpage, it wouldn't be mandatory, but it could be used for works with enough tropes that the split wouldn't cause either page to become sparse. Or at least the way I imagine it.

Doing it this was wouldn't cause any harm, and it could be implemented at any pace tropers feel like doing the work. It's really just moving a certain category of tropes to a subpage.

I'm not sure it's necessary or useful to sort them out in the various different places, though. If there are several locations that basically count as settings all on their own, with lots of tropes each (especially if it's a franchise), then it could be an idea, but if there's just a handful of tropes each, then I think it would just clutter the page and make it harder to look through.
